Iftar Dinner – A Night of Community, Kindness, and Togetherness

This is our second year that a group of Muslim volunteers has organized a Ramadan festival, welcoming more than 200 attendees—including families, teachers, and staff from all faith backgrounds such as Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu,—at the heart of downtown Toronto. This year was a truly unforgettable celebration, filled with joy, warmth, and a deep sense of togetherness. It was amazing to see everyone come together, sharing laughter, traditions, and a spirit of generosity.

The excitement in everyone’s eyes was indescribable. The evening began with warm greetings and an opening speech about Ramadan by four students, setting the tone for a night of connection and celebration. The speech welcomed guests and explained the significance of Ramadan as a month observed by million Muslim around the world that emphasizes fasting, kindness, self-reflection, gratitude, and generosity. It highlighted how families gather for Suhoor before sunrise and break their fast with Iftar at sunset, while fasting encourages empathy for those experiencing hunger locally and globally. Ramadan is also a time for personal growth, encouraging patience, self-control, and positive behavior. The month concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, when families and friends come together to share meals and express gratitude, reinforcing the broader message of kindness, community, and caring for others. This was followed by two beautiful musical performances by a group of students—one in Arabic and one in English—bridging cultures through song.

One of the most special moments of the night was the Ramadan-themed drawing competition. As each artwork was displayed on the screen, we held a lucky draw, selecting 10 names to receive gift cards. Seeing the creativity of the participants and the excitement of the winners made this a truly heartwarming highlight.

The energy soared during our Kahoot game, which featured questions about Ramadan and general questions about Canada. The friendly competition brought everyone closer, and the top three winners proudly received gift cards for their knowledge and quick thinking.

As the sun set, we gathered to enjoy a variety of delicious traditional foods, embracing the spirit of community and togetherness that Ramadan represents. And in a true display of teamwork, everyone helped clean up at the end of the night, making it not just a celebration but a shared effort.

In addition to celebrating, we also had the opportunity to give back and revive the spirit of “Sadagha” I would love to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our wonderful community for their generous support of the Family Food Pantry. Their donations of canned and non-perishable food items in this holy month of Ramadan will make a meaningful difference for those in need. Thank thoes who contributed for embodying the true spirit of compassion and giving!

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the dedication of our incredible team of around 30 volunteers regardless of their background working tirelessly day and night to create such a beautiful event. Their hard work, passion, and commitment brought this celebration to life, and we are beyond grateful for their efforts.
